More than 1,000 volunteers provided nearly 84,000 hours of community service last year through the Retired and Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) ” Colorado West Inc.

Medicare counseling, handyman services and a “Circle of Friends” all are supplied for free, though donations are appreciated to cover program costs.

On Valentine’s Day, RSVP will launch its first annual fundraising drive. Donations to the 501(c)(3) are tax-deductible. (To schedule services or donate, contact RSVP at 249-9639 or at 121 N. Park Ave., Suite C, in Montrose.)

As Medicare’s designated Regional Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program, RSVP deploys volunteers to help senior citizens make informed choices about increasingly complex Medicare issues.

Volunteers also provide minor home repairs and home-safety evaluations for elderly residents who are frail, handicapped or living on a limited income.

Repairs are limited to those that increase the resident’s safety, comfort or welfare. The program is intended to help those who cannot help themselves, not to compete with professionals.

The Circle of Friends support system helps seniors with transportation, shopping and errands as well as providing companionship, respite, check-in phone calls, mending and household management.

RSVP has been providing such assistance since 2001 throughout Montrose, Delta, Ouray, Gunnison and San Miguel counties ” serving more than 86,000 senior citizens living with 8,482 square miles.

RSVP volunteers and staff work to strengthen their communities by serving those in need, which in turn encourages more volunteerism.
