Council election critical

Re: “We can do better”, Daily Press January 31

Questions remain unanswered. A new direction is needed. We can and must do better. The upcoming city and county elections are very important.

In my opinion our entire “economic development plan” for both the city and county urgently needs to be restructured from the bottom up and the top down. In recent years, Montrose city and county politicians combined have awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars for the funding of big deal, star studded, pie-in-the-sky economic proposals that have produced minimal positive results. A case in point is the reported BOCC award of $100,000 to MEDC to be paid this year. County employees and department heads have to be disturbed about this level of funding, knowing that their priorities go begging. The question of blatant cronyism remains. Politicians that think they must placate a few back slappers or a particular organization to get elected or re-elected at the expense of the general electorate must stop once and for all.

A downtown redirection of our economic resources, accompanied by a total new vision for success is in the start up phase. It needs our support. However, it must be accompanied by a solid business development plan that serves the needs of our community, a published cost benefit analysis, and a solid conflict of interest policy that eliminates family, board members, and any question of political payoff’s or self dealing.

It is extremely important that we elect those candidates, with real business experience that have produced jobs, to take the city’s helm of leadership. We can do our part by “not supporting” or “not voting” for those candidates running for city council that violated the public trust of their office, or are nothing more than put-up candidates to further a destructive agenda.

We must do better. Our future depends on it.
