BASALT”After going into halftime with a 20-point lead the Lady Indians didn’t let their foot off the pedal, as they handily defeated Basalt, 54-26 Tuesday evening.

Through the first eight minutes of play, Montrose found several ways to get the ball to senior Hanna Bowden. Montrose High Head Coach Eric Sanchez noted that the Lady Longhorns came out playing a one-three-one defense and the Lady Indians were able to exploit it by dishing the ball down low to Bowden.

“We started off a little slow tonight getting off the bus,” Sanchez said. “But after we got warmed up we were able to put pressure on them, while offensively we were able to hit multiple perimeter shots throughout the game.”

After 16 minutes of play the Lady Indians built themselves a 29-9 lead and showed no signs of slowing down.

During halftime Sanchez stressed to his players that he wanted them to keep the pressure up and not let their guard down during the second half.

“We wanted to put pressure on them and give ourselves a nice little cushion,” he said. “Through most of the second half we were able to score low and make shots we had to make. We definitely looked good in the second half.”

The Lady Indians tallied 17 points in the third quarter, while only allowing the Lady Longhorns a total of six. Through the first three quarters Montrose outscored Basalt 46-15.

The fourth quarter proved to be the same as the Lady Indians continued to dominate their counterparts. They tacked on eight more points on their way to their 13th victory of the season.

Leading scorers for the Lady Indians were Bowden with 20 points and junior Jana Horn with 10. Kaylee Walker and Kala Keltz each added seven. Bowden also added 10 rebounds on the evening.

The Lady Indians, who are now 13-5 overall and 3-2 in the Southwestern League, will hit the road Friday evening to take on league rival Grand Junction at 5:30 p.m.
