GRAND JUNCTION ” The Montrose girl swimmers walked away with second place at the West Slope Girls Conference Championships in Grand Junction Saturday.

The swimmers competed in the simifinals Friday and all 12 Montrose swimmers placed to move onto Saturday’s finals.

“We put someone in first place almost all of the way through,” said Montrose High Head Coach Silas Almgren. “We have 12 swimmers and everyone competed in finals ... the first time that has been the case. We have a small team, but it’s nice that everyone can contribute.”

The Montrose team has come in second most of the year and Almgren said Durango’s “depth is hard to overcome.” Durango came in first at the conference.

Next weekend, the girls will head to the state championships.

“We have seven girls with state qualifing times in multiple events,” he said.

Those who have qualified for state are Emily Stucky, Amanda Winslow, Brooke Gaber, Ashley Aragon, Alyssa Aragon, Jenny Nocas and Rashyll Leonard. Tessa DeJong also qualified in the diving competition, however, during the weekend she may have suffered a broken toe. Almgren did not have further information.

Each girl can swim in two individual events and two relays or in one individual event and three relays. Almgren won’t decide how he will stack his team until later this week.

“I have a lot of options to put the best team in the water,” he said.
