The Indians will have 20 swimmers and five divers heading into the 2010 swim season. Montrose High head coach Silas Almgren said having the strong numbers will help them be competitive throughout the season, while allowing them to fill all racing slots.
“We have a lot of tradition here at Montrose High,” Almgren said. “The boys group has won lots of league championships, but unfortunately, we haven’t won one in the last three seasons.”

“Last season was the first ever in my experience as a coach where we fell out of the top two spots in our league,” Almgren said. “As of right now, it’s too early to tell how the season will play out, but we have experienced swimmers and swimmers that have the willingness to work.”
The Indians hit the pool next weekend for their home tournament, The Montrose Invitational. Almgren said the invite can be pretty rigorous, but at the same time gives more experienced swimmers a college-type atmosphere in regards to competition.
As far as expectations for the season, Almgren said they’re guarded as of now.
“I told the boys I’m not going to be expecting anything until April,” he said.
Time will only tell how far the Indians go this season, especially without a heavy group of seniors to lead them. Almgren stated that even without a heavy group of seniors, he still has a group that is willing to do the work.
“We definitely have the ability to vie for one of the type spots in our league this season,” he said.
