Marcela Palefsky was named Colorado Journalist of the Year by the Colorado High School Association, and she was awarded the coveted Dorothy Greer scholarship.
She is the first Montrose High student to earn Colorado Journalist of the Year in the past 20 years, said Kathy Gaber, Montrose High journalism teacher and newspaper adviser.

“There are a lot of good Colorado high school newspapers, so I didn’t know my chances (for the scholarship and award),” she said. “It’s just really exciting.”
The Dorothy Greer Scholarship is awarded each year to the top high school senior journalist in Colorado. It provides $2,000 if the winner attends college in the state, or $1,000 for students such as Palefsky who are going out of state for college.
After reviewing several schools, including the University of Colorado and Colorado State University, Palefsky chose Arizona State University, where she will pursue a journalism degree at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications. She said it was the right school for her and close to home.
Palefsky got her start by taking a journalism class her freshman year at Montrose High and finding it “really interesting.” She wrote news and feature stories for the school paper, “The Chieftain,” her sophomore year, before becoming editor in chief her junior year ” a position usually given to a senior.
Palefsky, now a senior, is serving a second year as the editor.
