Corey, who was roughed up during the first inning, threw 10 strikeouts to help the Pirates defeat Summit 11-3.
With the victory, Olathe advanced into the second round of the annual Lloyd McMillan Baseball Tournament.

The early deficit, however, didn’t faze Olathe. When their turn came to bat they tallied four runs in the bottom of the first to regain the lead 4-2.
“I thought we got good production throughout our lineup today,” Olathe High head coach Joe Archuleta said. “We had guys coming through with timely hits and for the first time out this season I thought they did a good job.”
From the top of the second inning and on, the Pirates displayed their offensive and defensive prowess as they began to take complete control of the game.
After Corey recorded his fifth strikeout, the Pirates were treated with an in-the-park home run from catcher Cody Harrison. That home run extended Olathe’s lead to 5-2.
Overall, the Pirates recorded eight hits on the afternoon, two of which were home runs. OHS’ Willy Corey and Harrison both went 3-5 in hitting, while Harrison, who had the in-the-park home run, also had a triple and a single.
“Both of those guys have been in our program for the last two years,” Archuleta said. “They’re making some nice adjustments at the plate.”
Archuleta was pleased with his team’s efforts, but still sees room for improvement.
“Right now we’re still answering some questions as far as the lineup,” he said. “We still need to find out where some kids will be playing. But overall, I thought we played pretty solid defense added with good pitching.”
The Pirates couldn’t celebrate their opening-round victory for very long. The Delta Panthers were waiting on deck for their chance to advance into the final round of the tournament, as they had defeated Alamosa 11-9 earlier in the day.
With both teams riding high on momentum, it was the Panthers who continued to roll as they went onto defeat the Pirates 13-0.
“We had (Willy) Corey on the mound to start the game and he only gave up two earned runs,” Archuleta said. “Overall we had eight errors and gave up a bunch of unearned runs, which led to our loss.”
It’s still early in the season, said Archuleta, and he’ll continue to tweak his lineup.
“We just need to get better,” he said. “Willy did a nice job on the mound for us. But we needed to make more plays. Offensively we just couldn’t get the run support.”
Olathe plays Emery High School of Castle Dale, Utah at 10 a.m. today in Montrose.
