City one step closer to pot shop moratorium

Posted: Wednesday, November 21, 2012 3:30 am

Only two weeks after state voters approved Amendment 64, a measure that legalizes the use and possession of up to an ounce of marijuana for those 21 and older, members of the City Council wasted no time Tuesday giving preliminary approval to an ordinance that would place a moratorium on the review of applications for retail dispensaries of recreational marijuana within the city.

The ordinance attracted the support of all four council members present at Tuesday’s regular scheduled meeting. The ordinance which will be up for a second reading on Dec. 4.

    Smokeys concerns:
    *More tar than cigarettes...3 tokes a day = 1 cigaret...not bad
*We want to smoke w/o repercussions...EXACTLY...just like alcohol
*Medical shops being broken into...It's called burglary...It happens to every sort of business known to man! Even banks, you think we should close them down?
*Minors going to the hospital...I wonder how many minors go to the hospital for just THC overdose??? Versus alcohol???
*Marijuana kills...I don't ever remember seeing ANYTHING stating that marijuana usage(alone) was the cause of a death! I'm sure that you could go through 100 years of archives to find something, but, numbers are LOOOOWWWWW!
*Drive while stoned...I'm not an advocate of this like I am not an advocate of cell phone usage, pets on the laps of the driver, speeding, putting on makeup while driving, changing radio stations while driving, etc...
*Smelly crap around my kids...This is no different than alcohol and sex, just talk to them.
    Have a good day.

no support!!!! How about 6 times more tar than cigarettes! Please do not say I need to educate myself until you know who I am. Why should someone buy from a local shop when they can grow 6 plants themselves??? 3 budding and 3 growing!! You people are so out of touch. How about getting with local law enforcement to see how much Pot there is. You just want to be able to do your dope and have no repercussions from it. It is illegal anyway you look at it. Federally it is still illegal so how do you expect to give illegal money away to the schools? Why were the "medical" shops being broken into? Why were illegal growers jailed? Why are people still giving it to minors? And why are minors going to the hospital with thc and other drugs in their system. Like I said it's just not one drug it's all drugs and yes it kills!!! Se how many people decide to drive while stoned!!! Got to get those chips and Cheetos somehow. And you are correct I still don't want to see the smelly crap around my kid. Just like I don't want to see someone drink around my kids they have a choice as well without someone forcing on them. Don't like it move to Denver. With all the other dope lovers.

there is so much to say about this!!! I have a feeling no matter what happens, this will always be a source of contention within the community. The tax dollars would be great for the State, and people are smoking up already and have been for years and years. why not tax it and make improvements to the state?? I say go for it!!!

I feel the accessibility to children is a void argument, however. all they have to do is go to riverbottom and ask the right person for some weed. .atleast at a dispensary, the ID's are checked and it's legit.

Here is a chance for the city council and BOCC to put up or shut up. Either they are pro business or not. We know low taxes are pure rhetoric and has no basis in truth.

"DJ" is correct in his observation, Montrose " is quite possibly the most hostile town for business that I've ever seen."

You would be surprised how much pot is smoked in this town, even staunch righties are closet bongers...God knows, "concerned res" could a bowl, just to chill out...

New 'speak easys" could be the way of the future, where 'real' conversation replaces outdated forums such as churches and political subversiveness.

This is quite possibly the most hostile town for business that I've ever seen. First they decimate Main Street by allowing all the growth to go in one area. Then they try to revive Main Street by having a weekly event which actually blocks the street entirely, hurting many Main St. busineses even more. Then they bring in a bike race that closes many businesses down, and now we're hearing we have the luxury of paying this same event $30,000.00 to, once again, shut down business in Montrose. Now when there is an opportunity for new small businesses, the town is shutting that down as well. Combine all of the above with sky high taxes and a less than friendly chamber, and it's no wonder the unemployment rate is so high. I guess they'd rather keep the money in the hands of dealers who will sell to minors without a second thought, than allow business people to step in and only sell to adults.

Yes!! Hope they make several of these places, about time! They tax alcohol and cigarettes why not marijuana, and you never here of someone dying due to marijuana on the news or in the newspaper ! I agree alot of people need to learn more about it instead of bashing and thinking they are right!

@smokey how ironic that your comment posted at 4:20! Do you have statistics or sources to support your outlandish claims? When you want people to buy into your "story" you really should have proof. Actually, your statement that pot is just like alcohol, is EXACTLY why it was legalized! If it is just like alcohol, it should be treated just like alcohol! If you can have a bar and liquor store on main street, you should be able to have a pot shop as well. I can site MANY sources that show pot is MUCH safer than alcohol, and it has medical purposes. It has been medically proven, and THAT can't be intelligently argued! Also, marijuana isn't killing people everyday, your claim that other crap is being put in it is weak at best, again you offer no proof. The shops are going to be heavily regulated, therefore people arn't going to be going in and getting pot laced with anything. You don't go into the grocery store and worry that your lettuce is laced with drugs do you? Stop with the scare tactics and do some research with an open mind. People are no longer suffering in pain and starving from chemo simply because of pot.

"It's a killer"??? You would be surprised of the positive attributes of marijuana. Honest.
IT'S A SAFER ALTERNATIVE TO ALCOHOL!!! As I stated earlier, people just need to be educated and be willing to drop the negative stigma. All opponents need to beware of hypocrisy and allow others to enjoy individual freedoms.

Sending children to Afghanistan to put their lives on the line guarding poppy fields to contribute to the heroin problem is somehow higher on the social responsibility list than farmers here increasing their yearly output or building a textile mill to process hemp products and creating jobs.....Hmmmm...

No valid argument are you serious. It's a killer. How many more deaths do we need before we say enough. Of course people say its not marijuanas fault. It was the alcohol or something else. In almost all cases marijuana was involved. I'm tired of this it's socially acceptable. Not in my world not in the Colorado I grew up in and I for one will not sit by while you think it's okay because it's not. Marijuana is killing people everyday because others are putting other crap in it it's a drug just like alcohol or anything else. What a sad state we are.

They have been trying to revive "Main street" for years. They finally have a golden opportunity and they want to shut it down. Does the city council have any idea how hypocritical they are by allowing bars in city limits and not a voter approved establishment. The Coloradans have spoken!!! We(the State of Colorado and especially Montrose) have an opportunity to capitalize on something that most people know to be safe and socially acceptable(relatively speaking when compared to alcohol and pharmaceutics). If the opponents were properly educated on this, there is no doubt they would accept it. Ignorance is bliss(and costly in this case). Maybe we need more public forums to further discuss this. There is absolutely NO valid argument against marijuana!

You knew the religious right would find something wrong with God's creations, that's how they roll....they would rather spend a thousand dollars per second on a bike race than create work and revenue from a potentially booming industry because their "morals" get in the way of good public decision making...

    What I want to know-
Is the city one step closer in drafting the
letter to the Secretary of the State
refusing any of the estimated 40-50 million
dollars of tax income designated for schools?
