MHS golfer Willis aiming to shine in state tournament

Posted: Sunday, September 30, 2012 2:00 am

Due to the array of talent on the Montrose High boys golf squad this season, junior Riley Willis was one of several Indians who was shuffled between varsity and junior varsity play.

But Montrose coach Angelo DeJulio said from the start Willis had the potential to have a breakout round and never look back. Turns out he was right.

In recent weeks Willis shed the Clark Kent “one of the guys” persona in favor of a Superman mystique, becoming a force to be reckoned with among all area golfers in recent tournaments. He was the only Montrose golfer to earn one of the 84 coveted spots in the Class 4A state tournament, which takes place Monday and Tuesday at The Links at Cobble Creek Golf Course.
