County regs designed with sage-grouse in mind

Move is part of effort to prevent endangered listing

Posted: Thursday, August 29, 2013 2:00 am

New Montrose County regulations require a development permit before certain activities can take place in ares designated as Gunnison sage-grouse occupied habitat.

Commissioners on Aug. 19 approved adoption of wildlife impact mitigation regulations “for development in areas containing or having significant impact on natural resources of statewide importance” — specifically, the Gunnison sage-grouse, which is up for listing under the federal Endangered Species Act.

Montrose County doesn’t want that to happen and has undertaken several efforts to demonstrate that such a listing isn’t warranted.
