Rancor marks Nucla airfield contract approval

‘Conflict of interest’ outcry as airport board member nabs award

Posted: Tuesday, July 30, 2013 3:00 am

Monday’s Montrose County Commission meeting saw a resident gaveled down and declared out of order, as well as sharp exchanges between commissioners and other residents, one of whom declared Commissioner David White “sick” before leaving the room.

The trigger: a debate about whether there was a conflict of interest in awarding a Nucla airport construction contract to Montrose County Airport Advisory Board member John Reams — and whether the project on the whole is a worthwhile investment.

The commissioners ultimately approved awarding the $461,944 contract to Reams Construction Company for the Nucla Hopkins Field terminal and site improvements project. The money comes from a Colorado Department of Transportation Aeronautics Board grant, which required a $44,000 match from the county.
