Murder suspect Frederick Mueller for now is set for trial in Hinsdale County late this summer — but the location could change.
His defense team is expected to file a motion for change of venue, according to records from his appearance in Gunnison District Court on Wednesday. Attorneys also want a judge to reconsider a previous order denying Mueller bail.
Mueller, 49, is accused of killing his wife, Dr. Leslie Mueller, in rural Hinsdale County nearly four years ago. An arrest warrant for first-degree murder was issued and served on him in February at his Texas business.
Dr. Mueller drowned on May 3, 2008, in Cottonwood Creek. Exactly how the Texas physician came to grief is hotly contested by prosecutors and Frederick Mueller’s defense team.
Prosecutors say Mueller is responsible for Dr. Mueller’s death. They contend he lied when he told Hinsdale County authorities she had fallen over an embankment during a hike, then “slid” into the water and was bounced downstream.
