Lifelong Montrose resident Mary Ellen Martin, age 82, passed away of natural causes at Montrose Memorial Hospital early Thursday morning, June 21, 2012.
Mary Ellen was born Jan. 30, 1930, in Montrose, Colo., to Pete and Elizabeth (Bosgal) Holzmeister. She lived for a little while in Silverton, Colo., but attended school and spent most of her life in Montrose. She met Charles R. Martin in Montrose in 1945, and they were married on Sept. 9, 1946. They moved to Uravan for a few years and moved back home to Montrose. Mary loved taking care of her large family. She was a wonderful cook and worked for San Juan Living Center for a while as a cook for the residents there. She loved gardening, her flowers and canning.
Mary is survived by her eight children, Judy (Jack) Black of Black Canyon, Ariz., Betty (Pete) Kiker of Montrose, Ted (Kathy Simmons) Martin of Montrose, Norma (John) Yates of Montrose, Debbie (Eddie) Maddox of Montrose, Peggy (Russell) Thompson of Montrose, Robin (Bob) May of Montrose, and Tabatha (Chris) Arnold of Montrose; 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Elizabeth; her loving husband, Charles Martin; her brothers, Jon Holzmeister, Don Brown and Bill Brown; her grandson, Kenneth Henderson, and all her aunts and uncles.
A visitation for family and friends will take place Sunday, June 24 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Valley Lawn Funeral Home chapel. A funeral service in honor and celebration of Mary’s life will be held at Valley Lawn Funeral Home chapel on Monday, June 25 at 2 p.m., followed by interment at Valley Lawn Cemetery.
