Some items to consider and some to look forward to …
Posted: February 05, 2012 - 2:00 am

Big kudos to the Montrose Police Department, which really melted the hearts of our community while taking on the Montrose/Olathe Special Olympics teams in basketball Saturday at Montrose High School. The game was well attended with broad smiles throughout the stands and tunes from the Montrose High School band to cheer everyone on. Through my eyes, this was one of most warming events exemplifying our community’s ability to work together and do the right thing. Good job to all.

The loss of Dr. Ted Dickinson is significant. He not only tended to those in medical need but was instrumental in helping develop Montrose. As is true fashion in Montrose, the grieving and healing process took place throughout the community and through many venues.

I must first begin this week by acknowledging the level of professionalism the Montrose Daily Press has displayed during the coverage of the Myrl Serra case. This case was being monitored by a number of news organizations across the state, and your very own community newspaper provided front-page photos that ran in The Grand Junction Sentinel and The Denver Post by my very own brother, Nate Wick. This is news creation that we as a community should be proud of and not allow to go unnoticed. Good job, team!

Different kinds of excitement
Posted: December 25, 2011 - 2:00 am

Today, I’ll open my eyes and look at my wife. I’ll then take a deep breath and think about the many Christmas mornings I’ve experienced; the flood of emotions and excitement on any Christmas morning. I’ll then exhale and be grateful for everything I have right here, right now. For the excitement and experience one has toward Christmas changes over time … similar to love, faith and life.

Montrose, congratulations on hosting the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge! The second stage start from Montrose to Crested Butte on Tuesday, Aug. 21 will be a big event and a big win for our community. This event has national implications with its cable television exposure and media following. According to Jenni Sopsic, interim CEO of the Montrose Association of Commerce and Tourism, the media contingent alone consists of 150 people. This should serve as a big win in the new direction of Montrose. Congratulations to MontroseACT and all involved in making this a reality.

Refining the process
Posted: December 04, 2011 - 2:00 am

You know the old adage, don’t change something that ain’t broke? Well, that doesn’t always seem like the most prudent approach. Just because something achieves its objective doesn’t mean the process was best. In my experience, you assess and refine your process, even if it’s successful, because success is always changing.

Family is a noun filled with mixed emotions – it’s the first thing you learn about, the first thing you love and the last thing you know.

We are all aware of the growing disparity between the haves and have-nots in our country. There are many arguments to be made as to why this is the case, but our middle class is shrinking at an alarming rate. Jobs are going oversees to third-world countries that are rapidly developing better-educated and more-technical work forces than our own. The cost of labor is significantly less overseas, and it’s hard to consider how/why these general manufacturing jobs will ever come back, unless we compete on price or niche manufacturing. The notion of us losing ground in the world economy is frightening, but it doesn’t mean we should give up. It means we should invest in our future, and many people are trying to do so.

My wife Mandy and I were very excited about trick-or-treaters coming to our house on Halloween. We stocked up on a lot of cavity-inducing candy and thought, “If you buy it, they will come.” Our house is located in a good neighborhood with good neighbors, so we expected a strong turnout, but that wasn’t the case. Then again, the trick-or-treaters who did stop by made out like candy bandits. We’ll have to see if the trend continues next year. Here’s to me hoping it’s not!

When I was growing up, my father use to have a number of sayings and speeches to guide me and give me perspective during my adolescent years. One saying which I don’t necessarily agree with (or won’t for a while) is that “a man truly becomes independent the day his father dies.” There’s something incredibly saddening about this notion, but its indication is that of the guidance and shadow of a father. Today, I reflect on this statement more on the basis of change and opportunity. It appears his “Wick-isms” have more meaning for me now than they did when I was growing up … or perhaps I still am.

“A tale of two babies”
Updated: October 11, 2011 - 6:43 pm

Three weeks ago, I wrote a column in honor of my grandmother, my wife and our unborn child. It was a very personal piece, and I have an interesting update. On Wednesday, Mandy and I went to find out the sex of our new addition during our 20-week checkup. Up to this point, we had heard the heartbeat and felt as though everything was coming along as planned. That was until Wednesday.
