A man who had been reported as overdue was found dead on Saturday, the apparent victim of an accidental fall down an embankment.
Maurie Curtis, 73, was found near the Little Cimarron; Montrose County Sheriff Gene Lillard said the man’s nephew made the tragic discovery.
Curtis was reported overdue earlier last week, prompting an attempt to locate call to law enforcement. Investigators pinged his phone to a broad radius crossing the Montrose and Gunnison county lines, and aired a description of his truck.
On Saturday, July 20, a family member found the truck 10 miles off of U.S. 50, on the Little Cimarron, near the High Mesa cutoff, with its door open.
A nephew began looking around and located Curtis’ body down the side of an embankment. The MCSO and its posse responded and recovered Curtis.
Foul play is not suspected.
Autopsy results are pending, but Dr. Thomas Canfield, Montrose County coroner, said the manner of death appears to be accidental.
Curtis worked in construction and was well known in the area, said Lillard, who said he also knew him well.
“Our condolences go out to the family of Maury Curtis. It was a very tragic event,” he said.
