This Saturday, May 4, is a special day for geeks everywhere.

Not only is this day Star Wars Day (May the fourth be with you), but it’s also Free Comic Book Day.

What is Free Comic Book Day you ask? FCBD is an annual event during which comic publishers and retail partner put free comics in the hands of fans and enthusiasts, both old and new.

Since Montrose is lacking its own comic store, the Montrose Library is stepping up to fill a big role.

Although this year we will only have comics for the kiddos (I know, sorry adults, as a comic enthusiast myself, I feel your pain) we are hoping to make it a fun day for the whole family.

We will have comics for the kiddos from Dark Horse Comics, Archie Comics, and DC Comics, along with crafts, games and activities for all ages.

We’ll even have a cosplay contest. Come dressed as your favorite character for the chance to win an awesome prize.

Members of the Mountain Garrison of the 501st Legion, a Star Wars costuming group, will be here in many of their most iconic Empire costumes.

From Storm Troopers to TIE Fighter Pilots to Sith Lords, the 501st Legion brings high-quality Star Wars cosplaying right to Montrose. The Western Slope Ghostbusters will also be here with Ecto vehicles, fun costumes and even a giant Marshmallow Man.

Need help getting into comics or Star Wars before this big day? The librarians here got your back. We can recommend a favorite series, a new-to-you comic based on your reading interests, or start you on your journey of the Star Wars cinematic universe: chronological or date of release? It’s up to you.

Sara Davis is a youth services librarian at the Montrose Regional Library.
