Joseph A. Doak sadly passed away unexpectedly on July 29, 2018, at 96 years young. He was born to William Clarence and Alice Blanche (Magnan) Doak in Vancouver, British Columbia. His early years were spent in Boston and New York, where he received degrees from Utica College and Syracuse University in electrical engineering. Joe served in the United States Navy and Merchant Marine as a communications officer on active sea duty during WWII.

He married Yvonne Canitrot in 1944, who passed in 1952. In 1955, he married Ruth Phyllis Kretser and raised six children while working for General Electric as an electrical engineer in Phoenix, Arizona. The family moved to Gunnison, Colorado, where Joe owned and operated PERLE TV, a computer and electronics business.

Joe's retirement years were filled with travel, family and charitable work. He leaves a legacy of service to others: teaching computer skills to seniors; English to arriving immigrants; and reading skills to kindergartners and third-graders in Montrose and Holy Family Catholic School in Grand Junction. He joyfully gave of his talents, time and resources. He and Phyllis delivered weekly Meals-on-Wheels for more than 12 years in Montrose.

His business acumen was shared with SCORE, as an accredited SBA counselor, helping others build their dream companies. While in Montrose, he was active in AARP, writing their newsletter for many years. Joe loved to talk! He spoke to young and old, near and far and maintained his amateur radio license.

As a practicing Catholic, Joe was involved with the Stephens Ministry at St. Mary's Church in Montrose and continued his ecumenical ministry with Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Grand Junction. He was especially humbled and honored to comfort hospice patients in their times of need.

Gardening was a favorite hobby, sharing flowers and veggies with neighbors and friends. His turnips, however, had few takers!

He is preceded in death by brothers, Walter; Len; sister, Doris; and beloved wife, Phyllis.

Joe is survived by three sons and three daughters: Erin (Wendy) and children Katherine, Patrick and Kimberly; Paul (Susan) and children Sister Mary Hanah RSM and Nathan; Roger (Jeanie) and children Madeline and Julia all of the Denver area; Elaine (James) Mackley and children Sarah (Julian) Henao and Adam of Grand Junction; Lisa (Monte) Sanders and children Daniel (AJ) and Andrea of San Clemente, California; and Louise (James) Devyor and her children Shawn (Rose) Kleinstiver and Keith and Felipe Kleinstiver of Sun City West, Arizona. Joe also leaves five great-grandchildren: Miles; Lavender; Evy; Ian; and Solana.

Joe's family requests that you remember him with acts of kindness in lieu of flowers. Memorial contributions can be made to HopeWest Hospice of Grand Junction. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church at 790 26 1/2 Road, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
