The city of Hotchkiss hosted the North Fork Invitational cross country meet on Saturday, Sept. 4. The North Fork boys’ team took the team title, with Ouray, Olathe, Delta and Grand Valley rounding out the top five finishers.
The Delta girls’ nudged the North Fork team for the distaff title.
Vincent Schierenberg, a 10th grader from Ouray High School, won the boys’ title with a time of 18:23.8 seconds. He outlasted Alyster Birk of North Fork by less than half a second. John Dexter of Delta finished in 3rd place.
The Pirates’ Scott Shackelford led the Olathe finishers by placing 9th with a time of 21:36 seconds. He was followed by Ben Kamperman in 11th place and Connor Ripley who finished 12th. Also finishing for Olathe were Jose Hernandez and Christopher Brinks.
Junior Elsie Weiss of Aspen won the girls’ title posting a time of 21:47.20 seconds, following by Paige Kehmeier of Delta and Eden Bohart of Aspen high school. The Pirates’ Analee Saldana and Yadira Alcaraz finished 15th and 16th in the competition.
Head coach Roger Carlson said the team had “outstanding” performances on a difficult course.
Next up will be a trip to Grand Junction to compete in the Tiger Invitational on Friday, Sept. 11. Start time is 9:00 a.m.
